Indispensable Colors

Many times I have heard that there exists nothing of no benefits in the world. Likewise, colors, whose countless functions are beyond imagination, make no exception. To a large extent, I believe without colors our world would not be a pleasant place to live (though living would be possible).

It is said that variety is the spice of life. Colors inject variety to our lives. Clothes, cars, furniture, and so on are all rolled out in colorful types. Suppose everything in our surrounding was similar in color; wouldn’t the world be a boring place to live? Therefore, the exuberancy and vibrancy of our surrounding is, in part, due to applying colors of different kinds.

Colors can speak to us; since they impart some concepts. Some examples are as follows: on the pitch, a referee punishes footballers by the use of colorful cards; a traffic light brings cars to a halt by turning red from green; in some parts of the world black is the sign of the sorrow, while white suggests otherwise. 

Of many other functions colors perform, I can mention to their roles in our health. To a typical consumer, colors tend to be an index in judging the quality of food products. To the best of my knowledge, the color of fresh meat is different to that of the old one. We avoid eating bread if its crust has turned green. And in most houses, the shininess suggests the cleanliness.

Although indispensable, the absence of colors does not lead to the end of the world. Since the human being is likely to adopt itself to changes; as the colorblind and visually impaired, surprisingly, do so.

To sum up, colors make our universe livelier, as well as many other functions they fulfill. So, their disappearance would be conspicuous. However, some people are used to its absence. 

ماه رمضان و روزه داری بازیکنان حرفه ای فوتبال اروپا

طی چند سال گذشته موضوع ماه رمضان در میان محافل فوتبال دنیا به بحثی داغ تبدیل شده است. کارشناسان، با توجه به تقویم فشرده مسابقات فوتبال و تمرینات طاقت فرسا، خصوصا در فوتبال حرفه ای اروپا، این سوال را مطرح می کنند که آیا بازیکنان می توانند در چنین شرایطی روزه بگیرند یا خیر. سایت فیفا در گزارشی به بررسی روزه داری در میان چند بازیکن فوتبال، که توانسته اند کیفیت کار خود را با وجود حذف چند وعده غذایی حفظ کنند، پرداخته است.

علم سعادت (Euthenics)

Euthenics is “a science dealing with the improvement of human well-being by altering its  living conditions[1,2].” Although it has nothing to do with genetics, the term might be confused with eugenics.

While eugenics is concerned with manipulation of genetic inheritance to improve the physical and mental abilities of the human race[3], euthenics is just concerned with external factors which have major impacts on the living condition of a person, including education, health care, sanitation, etc[1].

The term, derived from the Greek verb “EUTHEIN”: “to thrive”, “to flourish”[2], first received attention in the first decade of the 20^th century when some scientists, like Ellen Swallow Richards who played a pioneering role in introducing this science, used it in their publications.

Ellen Swallow Richards (1842–1911), the first woman to enter MIT and the first American lady  to obtain a degree in chemistry, was interested in applying scientific principles to domestic situations, such as nutrition, sanitation, clothing, physical fitness, etc. She wrote several books on those topics, two of which are The Cost of Shelter (1905) and Euthenics, the Science of Controllable Environment (1910); the former is among the first books to discuss the term euthenics, with the meaning "the science of better living"[1,4].

To sum up, “EUTHENISTS”, “who are specialized in euthenics[2]”, try to find the ways to make the world a better place to live through changing environment, fighting contagious diseases, improving education, etc.

دلیل تجمع ماهیان جوان در نقاط کم عمق

تحقیقات صورت گرفته توسط محققان دانشگاه گوتنبرگ بیانگر این است که رقابت میان ماهیان قزل آلا و آزاد مسن تر و جوان تر سبب می گردد ماهیان جوان به نقاط کم عمق آب رانده شوند. دلیل این نوع پراکندگی جمعیت در میان دو گونه ذکر شده، شانس بیشتر برای پیدا کردن غذا و در امان بودن از خطر شکارچیان عنوان شده است.

پیش از این گمان می رفت توانایی کم ماهیان جوان به شنا کردن سبب می شود به نقاط کم عمق که سرعت آب کمتر است پناه ببرند اما اکنون دانشمندان به دلیل اصلی آن که چیزی جز رقابت نیست پی برده اند. بررسی ها نشان دادند پس از اینکه جمعیت در نقاط عمیق کم شد ماهیان جوان می توانند به آن نقاط نقل مکان کنند.

نتایج این تحقیق یادآور اهمیت حفظ و نگهداری از زیستگاه هایی است که در نقاط کم عمق رودخانه ها قرار دارند. محافظت از نقاط کم عمق آب که محل تجمع ماهیان جوان تر است راه حلی اساسی برای حفظ و بقای ماهیان آزاد و قزل آلا محسوب می شود.

مطالعه ای که در ماه مارس در دانشگاه کاردیف انجام شده نشان می دهد اشخاص زمانی از داشتن پول احساس خوشبختی می کنند که ثروتشان موجب گردد سطح زندگیشان از همکاران، دوستان و نزدیکانشان بالاتر رود. بنابراین صرفاً داشتن درآمد بالا خوشبختی انسان را تضمین نمی کند.
