Cell starvation might help treat cancer: a pathologist

Cell starvation can strengthen healthy cells by stemming and burning poisons accumulated in the cells, Dr. Hassan Akbari, a pathologist and faculty member of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science, told ISNA. “Starvation can weaken cancerous cells,” he added.

He stated that scientists at UK-based Southampton University have found a new way to destroy tumors by cell starvation. “A decline in daily calorie can strengthen healthy cells and eliminate accumulated poisons.” He went on to say that cancerous cells have frail structure, so they cannot tolerate lack of energy as well as healthy ones. Putting emphasis on the importance of cell starvation to cancer treatment, he said it cleans cells and invigorate the immune system. 

The researcher and instructor of Islamic Medicine described lack of energy as detrimental to cancerous cells and added frail structure of the cell nucleus and cytoplasm organelles in those kinds of cells results in their early destruction by lack of nutrients and ATP.

همانطور که مشاهده می‌شود، در جمله‌های بالا در مقابل شاعر و زبان به ترتیب از صفت‌های روس و روسی استفاده شده است، «شاعر و نویسندۀ روس»؛ «زبان روسی».

Iran's scientists use turmeric to develop nano-medicine for wound treatment

Tehran - Scientists developed an anti-inffective drug delivery system from turmeric extract and natural polymers that has proven useful in killing bacteria and treating wounds in an abrupt fashion. 

Infection is among the most critical contributing factors in mortality and disability, said Dr. Mirza Ali Mofzal Jahromi, a medical immunology specialist from Tarbiat-e-Modarres University, who was involved in the research.  Although antibiotics are prescribed frequently to treat different infections, they produce adverse side affects, and their intake results in drug resistance after a while. Meanwhile, they fail to restore injured textures.

He stressed the importance attached to the treatment of infections especially those inflicted upon military forces who have to frequently work in poorly equipped contexts, adding  it is inevitable to produce a nano-medicine preserved under extreme conditions in order to treat wounded soldiers. The study aimed to develop a harmless, effective nano-drug system to smartly release curcumin in infected targets. 

He went on to say that curcumin is a yellowish anti-microbial compound extracted from turmeric.  Chitosan is also a natural, biodegradable, biofriendly, low-toxic polymer used to produce nano-sized carriers for drug delivery, he added.  The study suggested chitosan/tripolyphosphate nanoparticles (CS/TPP) carrying curcumin can effectively treat infections arising from Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

He added, "Results indicated that nanoparticles carrying curcumin significantly inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in infected mice."  

" This nano medical system is customized to inhibit bacteria in-vitro in a fashion that there is no sign of drug resistance."  Amazingly, this nano-drug can abruptly treat injuries too. Additionally, its production and preservation are not costly.

Curcumin is highly sensitive to light,  he said, when asked about the reason why chitosan was selected as the drug carrier. The polymeric nano-carrier prevents light from approaching the drug, so its medical properties remain intact. Additionally, nanoparticles cause gradual release of drug into the injured texture, so its inhibitory impact is fostered. Chitosan, itself, has anti microbial properties promoting medical effects of curcumin.

He also said, "Results indicated that the proposed nano-drug can successfully replace current antibiotics."

In conclusion, he said, "To optimally load curcumin (2±75%) on chitosan nanoparticles, ion-activated gelling with triphosphate was used in this study." "FTIR, AFM, SEM, TEM, and DLS tests and spectrometry were applied to assess physico-chemical properties of synthesized nano-carriers and the loaded drug quantity.

The study, which was published in the Iranian Journal of Biotechnology, was conducted by Dr. Mirza Ali Mofzal Jahromi, a medical immunology specialist from Tarbiat-e-Modarres University, and Dr. Reza Mirnejad and Dr. Mehdi Kamali, Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences faculty members.

ترجمه کردن برخی ترکیب‌ها و اصطلاحات صرفاً با مراجعه به دیکشنری‌های تک‌زبانه امکان‌پذیر است. به عنوان نمونه؛

to tread water در جمله زیر:

The result to date is a standoff; the fund continues to tread water, with the macro-account making money and the rest of the fund losing. 

برای ترجمه کردن این ترکیب باید ابتدا به دیکشنری مراجعه و معنایی را که مقابل آن نوشته شده مطالعه کرد. با مطالعۀ معنای tread water به این نتیجه می‌رسیم که این اصطلاح یعنی پیشرفت نکردن و راکد ماندن.

ترجمۀ پیشنهادی:

تا به امروز، نتیجه‌ای غیر از بن‌بست حاصل نشده است؛ پیشرفتی در کار صندوق دیده نمی‌شود. به استثنای حساب کلان که در حال درآمدزایی‌ست سایر بخش‌های صندوق متحمل ضرر شده‌اند.
